The Courtauld gallery
I visited the Courtauld Gallery to gain inspirations towards other artworks, I will be constructing this academic year. The gallery consists of renaissance paintings and depicts the early forms of contemporary arts of abstract expressionism.
This gallery is interesting because, it shows the intellectual aspects of painting natural forms accurately considering scale and colour. The idea of using pigments to create realistic imagery is fascinating, and it is a skill I look forward to practicing.
I discovered a painting called "Manet's Bar" by Folie Bergere. It shows the reflection of a woman in a bar talking to a man. This generates lots of speculations as to what the man is saying to her. I believe that the man is interested and wants to get to know her. From the facial expression of the woman, it indicates that she isn't interested in him.
This may be that she is thought to be a hooker, because of her occupational task. The romantic settings of the restaurant of the dime lights, and the flowing of alcohol with food is the kind of environment set for a date. So I will not be surprised if she was asked out.
The speculation of the man being interested in her comes from the idea, of the woman being young and attractive. The uniform being worn compliments her figure and enhances the size of the breast, making her appealing to men.
However, the negative reaction of the woman might be the fact that she has over worked, and wants to take a break from the busy environment. This is evident in the background, of having wealthy customers dressed in special attire to celebrate an occasion. This means that the man may approach her for services that the barmaid cannot dress by herself.
Overall, I believe that the reflection of the woman explores the traditional idea of a selfie because, the painting captures the emotion and physical characteristics that a digital camera does. This shows that technology has evolved from traditional techniques, of demonstrating a three dimension object in space into a 2D image. The tonal range shows within paintings is also communicated in pictures to form the object.
Selfie project
The selfie project is about expressing physical characteristics with attributes which best describes you. This could be communicated through artworks, photography and motion. I have decided to produce work combing traditional idea of painting realistically, and manipulating pictures on Photoshop to have a contemporary effect. This would convey the art movement of Bauhaus. This is because, I prefer the broken mechanical visual effect that the art movement conveys. The bold colours separates the content of an artwork to create optional illusions, distracting the eyes from seeing the subject matter.
My intake of the Bauhaus movement would be to cut into manipulated images of self-portrait into shapes, sticking it back together in random composition. This would be done on Photoshop, by using the cut and paste tool. The colours of the images may vary from colour to black and white, creating optical illusions of facial features appearing bigger or smaller.
These are the final outcomes constructed on Photoshop, of overlapping images and shapes to create fragmentations of physical identity.
I believe that the art movement communicates my identity because, it conveys the different layers of my fun, bold and exaggerated personality that is straight forward. The decision of using the wearable art selfies was to also convey my cultural heritage of being an African princess, which is important to me.
Lastly, I believe that the final outcomes were successful because, I am able to combine my attributes with my physical characteristic into a creative piece of artwork that is aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. I am so happy with the outcomes, that I wouldn’t want to change anything,
